Elevate your build with 4 oz. Basalt Fiber Cloth, the high-performance, eco-friendly alternative to traditional fiberglass. Made from volcanic rock fibers, Basalt cloth offers a unique "bridge" between the characteristics of carbon fiber and E-glass, providing 20% more tensile strength than standard fiberglass at a similar weight.

Basalt features a clean plain-weave pattern that laminates with the same ease as E-cloth but offers vastly superior impact resistance. Unlike carbon fiber, which can be brittle and shatter under high stress, Basalt remains durable and resilient. Its natural vibration-damping properties make it the perfect choice for reducing "chatter" on EPS/Epoxy boards, resulting in a smoother, more dampened ride in choppy water.

Cut to Order — 4 Yard Minimum

Every order is cut fresh from the roll in one continuous length, so you get a single uninterrupted piece with no seams, joins, or creases — not offcuts from someone else's board. Because each cut is made by hand to your order, we ask for a 4 yard minimum. Choose your length below:

  • 4 Yards — $25.80  ($6.45/yd)
  • 6 Yards — $38.70  ($6.45/yd)
  • 8 Yards — $51.60  ($6.45/yd)
  • 10 Yards — $64.50  ($6.45/yd)

Shipping is the same flat rate for any length up to 10 yards, so there's no penalty for ordering long. Need a length that isn't listed, or a full roll? Email us and we'll quote it.

How Much Basalt Do I Need?

At 38" wide, one layer runs roughly the length of your board plus about 6" for laps. A rough guide:

  • Shortboard (5'8"–6'6"): ~2–2.5 yd per layer. A standard 4+4 deck / 4 bottom glass job needs 6–8 yards.
  • Fish or Mid-Length (6'6"–7'6"): ~2.5–3 yd per layer. Figure 8–10 yards for a full three-layer lam.
  • Longboard (9'0"+): ~3.5 yd per layer. Plan on 10 yards or more.
  • Repairs & patches: 4 yards covers a lot of ding work and small panel jobs.

When in doubt, order a little long. Basalt cuts and stores easily, and running short mid-lam is a bad afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for basalt cloth?
4 yards. Every order is cut by hand from the roll in one continuous piece, so 4 yards is our smallest cut. Longer lengths ship at the same flat shipping rate up to 10 yards.

How is basalt different from fiberglass?
Basalt is spun from melted volcanic rock rather than glass. It carries roughly 20% more tensile strength than standard E-glass at the same weight, resists impact far better than carbon fiber, and damps high-frequency vibration, which takes the chatter out of lightweight EPS builds.

Does basalt cloth work with epoxy or polyester resin?
Both. It wets out and laminates much like E-cloth. Most builders pair it with epoxy on EPS blanks, which is where its vibration damping pays off most.

Does basalt glass clear like fiberglass?
No. Basalt cures to a natural dark olive-bronze and is opaque, so it will cover foam and stringer detail underneath. Builders choose it for that "stealth" look rather than for clarity.

Is basalt harder to laminate than E-glass?
No. The plain weave wets out at about the same rate and drapes cleanly over rails. If you can glass a board in E-cloth, you can glass one in basalt.

How does it ship?
Rolled on a tube in one continuous length to prevent creasing. Cloth travels separately from other items in your order.

Key Advantages:

  • Eco-Friendly: A natural mineral-based fiber with a lower environmental impact than synthetic glass.
  • Superior Strength: 20% stronger than standard E-glass for improved longevity and dent resistance.
  • Vibration Damping: Excellent at absorbing high-frequency chatter, ideal for lightweight EPS builds.
  • High Impact Resistance: Extremely tough and resistant to shattering compared to carbon fiber.
  • Wide Coverage: 38" width is perfect for everything from performance shortboards to longboards and gliders.

Product Specifications:

  • Weight: 4 oz. — Lightweight performance with heavy-duty durability.
  • Width: 38" — Provides ample coverage for wide templates and clean laps.
  • Weave: Plain Weave for easy resin saturation and a flat profile.
  • Minimum Order: 4 yards, cut in one continuous length.
  • Shipping: Ships rolled to prevent creasing, and travels separately from other items in your order.

Pro Tip: Basalt has a beautiful, natural dark olive/bronze aesthetic. When glassed clear, it gives the board a unique "stealth" look that sets it apart from standard white boards.
