3 oz. Flax Cloth - 30" Width (Cut to Order)
Bridge the gap between sustainability and high performance with our 3 oz. Flax Cloth. Developed and woven specifically for the surfboard industry, this 100% natural flax fiber offers a unique, eco-friendly alternative to traditional fiberglass without sacrificing the strength your board needs.
Utilizing advanced low-twist fiber technology, this cloth delivers a stiffness-to-weight ratio comparable to E-glass while providing significantly improved vibration damping—resulting in a smoother ride in choppy conditions. Whether you are building a fully sustainable "Eco-Board" or simply want the beautiful, organic aesthetic of natural fiber, this flax cloth is engineered for easy processing and a professional finish.
Cut to Order — 4 Yard Minimum
Every order is cut fresh from the roll in one continuous length, so you get a single uninterrupted piece with no seams or joins. Because each cut is made by hand to your order, we ask for a 4 yard minimum. Choose your length below:
- 4 Yards — $54.00 ($13.50/yd)
- 6 Yards — $81.00 ($13.50/yd)
- 8 Yards — $108.00 ($13.50/yd)
- 10 Yards — $135.00 ($13.50/yd)
Shipping is the same flat rate for any length up to 10 yards, so there's no penalty for ordering long. Need a length that isn't listed? Email us and we'll quote it.
How Much Flax Do I Need?
At 30" wide, one layer runs roughly the length of your board plus about 6" for laps. Most builders use flax as a deck or bottom layer rather than a full glass schedule:
- Deck and bottom on a shortboard or fish (5'6"–6'4"): 4 yards.
- Full three-layer lam on a shortboard: 6 yards.
- Full glass job on a mid-length (6'6"–7'6"): ~2.5 yd per layer, so 8 yards for three layers.
- Longer mid-length, or a board plus spare cloth for patches: 10 yards.
When in doubt, order a little long. Flax cuts and stores easily, and running short mid-lam is a bad afternoon.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum order for flax cloth?
4 yards. Every order is cut by hand from the roll in one continuous piece, so 4 yards is our smallest cut. Longer lengths ship at the same flat rate up to 10 yards.
What resin works with flax cloth?
Flax laminates with both standard and bio-based epoxy. For a fully sustainable build, pair it with Resin Research Bio-Science epoxy. Polyester resin is not recommended with natural fiber.
Is flax harder to glass than fiberglass?
No. The low-twist weave wets out easily and lays flat on curves. It is also non-irritating to handle, so laminating and sanding are far more comfortable than with glass.
What does flax look like when glassed?
It cures to a natural golden-tan grain rather than clear. Flax is opaque, so it will hide foam and stringer detail underneath — most builders use it where they want that woven look on show.
How strong is flax compared to fiberglass?
Its stiffness-to-weight ratio is comparable to E-glass, with noticeably better vibration damping. It absorbs chatter, which gives a smoother, more planted feel in choppy water.
How does it ship?
Rolled on a heavy-duty tube in one continuous length to maintain weave integrity. Cloth travels separately from other items in your order.
Performance Advantages:
- Eco-Friendly: 100% natural flax fiber with a significantly lower environmental impact than glass.
- Enhanced Feel: Natural damping properties absorb chatter for a smoother, more "planted" feel on the water.
- Low-Twist Tech: Specific weave designed to wet out easily and lay flat on complex surfboard curves.
- Safe Handling: Non-irritating fibers make the glassing and sanding process much more comfortable.
Product Specifications:
- Weight/Weave: 100 g/m² (3 oz) | 2×2 Twill Weave.
- Width: 30" — Ideal for shortboards, fishes, and mid-lengths.
- Minimum Order: 4 yards, cut in one continuous length.
- Compatibility: Suitable for hand lamination or vacuum infusion. Works with both standard and bio-based epoxy resins.
- Shipping: Rolled in one continuous length on a heavy-duty tube to maintain weave integrity.
Pro Tip: For the ultimate sustainable build, pair this flax cloth with Resin Research Bio-Science resin. When glassing, ensure the cloth is fully saturated to showcase the natural golden-hued grain of the flax.
