The better question is simple: what does this design choice make the board feel like in the water? Once you understand that, custom board conversations get a lot easier.
The short answer: volume helps with float and paddle power, rails change hold and forgiveness, rocker controls speed and fit in the curve of the wave, and concave changes lift, drive, and water flow.

Volume is the amount of space inside the board, usually measured in liters. More volume generally means more float, easier paddling, and more help getting into waves. Less volume generally means the board sits lower in the water and can be easier to control at speed.
But volume by itself does not tell the whole story. Two boards can have the same liters and feel completely different if one carries foam under the chest and the other hides it through the rails or tail.
Normal surfer translation: if you are missing waves, sinking too much, or fighting every paddle, volume may be part of the fix. If the board feels corky, bouncy, or hard to set on rail, the volume may be too much or placed in the wrong area.
Rails: Hold, Bite, and Forgiveness
Rails are the edges of the surfboard. They affect how the board enters, holds, and releases from the water. A fuller rail can feel more forgiving and buoyant. A thinner or sharper rail can feel more sensitive and easier to bury into the wave face.
Rails are a big reason two boards with similar dimensions can feel nothing alike. A forgiving rail can help a newer surfer or a bigger surfer feel more stable. A more refined rail can help an experienced surfer get more hold and response when the wave has push.
Rocker: Speed vs. Curve
Rocker is the curve from nose to tail. Flatter rocker is usually faster and paddles easier because there is less curve dragging through the water. More rocker helps a board fit into steeper waves and turn tighter in the pocket.
This is one of the biggest places where local waves matter. A flatter board can feel amazing in soft everyday surf. The same board can feel sticky or too flat when the wave gets steep. More rocker can feel controlled in better waves, but slow in weak surf.

Concave: Lift, Drive, and Water Flow
Concave is the shape built into the bottom of the board. A single concave can create lift and speed. Double concave can add control and smooth rail-to-rail transitions. Vee can help a wider board roll from rail to rail more easily.
Bottom contours are subtle, but they matter. They shape how water moves under the board, which changes how the board accelerates, holds, releases, and transitions through turns.
The Magic Is How They Work Together
None of these features work alone. More volume with the wrong rail can feel bulky. Flat rocker with the wrong tail can feel too skatey. A fast bottom contour with the wrong fin setup can feel loose instead of lively.

How to Explain What You Want
You do not need to say, "I need more single concave and a lower entry rocker." You can describe the problem in normal language. A good shaper can translate that into design choices.
- "I miss waves" may point toward paddle power, foam placement, or rocker.
- "My board feels slippery" may point toward rails, tail, fin setup, or bottom shape.
- "It feels slow in weak surf" may point toward rocker, volume, outline, or fin drag.
- "It feels hard to turn" may point toward rail shape, tail rocker, width, or fin setup.
- "It feels nervous" may point toward too little volume, too much curve, or the wrong fins.
Fins Still Matter
Once the board is right, fins are one of the easiest ways to tune the feel. A fin change can add hold, loosen the tail, create more drive, or calm down a board that feels too free.
Think of fins as tuning, not a fix for a board that is fundamentally wrong. The better the shape matches you, the more useful fin changes become.
